Prof. dr. Beatrice de Graaf

Prof. Dr. Beatrice de Graaf is a distinguished university professor and historian at Utrecht University. She is also co-founder of the Security History Network and a columnist for NRC.

On September 26, SHN member Beatrice de Graaf, Professor at Utrecht University, will give a lecture at the prestigious Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA), part of Sciences Po.

In her talk, De Graaf will examine how ideas of national greatness, imperial glory, and authoritarian leadership are re-emerging in international politics, and how these narratives are placing increasing pressure on the international rule-based order. Why are leaders in countries such as Russia, the United States, Hungary, and France turning to blueprints with premodern roots? And how can historical analysis help unpack and challenge these political strategies?

The discussion will be moderated by Chiara Ruffa, affiliated with CERI and the PSIA faculty.

De Graaf’s invitation to speak at one of Europe’s leading institutions for international affairs highlights the growing relevance of historical research on security and threat in today’s global context. As a network, we’re proud to see one of our members contributing to this important conversation.
