Benjamin Duerr

Diplomat, international lawyer, and writer on international law and global politics.

Following his successful event in November 2025, Benjamin Duerr will be joining the Security History Network (SHN). With his broad expertise at the intersection of international law, diplomatic history, and questions of war and peace, he is a valuable addition to the network.

Benjamin Duerr is a political scientist, lawyer, and writer specializing in international law and the international order. He is the author of, among others, ‘De droom van Den Haag: De Haagse Vredesconferenties en het ontstaan van een nieuwe wereldorde’, which was shortlisted for the Libris History Prize, and of the biography Erzberger: Der gehasste Versöhner, about Matthias Erzberger, the statesman who played a key role in ending the First World War in 1918. His work engages with themes such as international law and world order, diplomatic history, and the historical foundations of contemporary security issues.

Duerr regularly appears in the media, including Dutch outlets, German public broadcasting, and the BBC. He currently works at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs; his publications and his membership of SHN are on a personal basis. Previously, he worked at the Centre for International Humanitarian Law in Stockholm, at the foundation of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Denis Mukwege, and as a journalist. His work has been published in outlets such as Foreign Affairs, The Atlantic, Al Jazeera English, NRC, De Volkskrant, De Groene Amsterdammer, Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, and Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Benjamin Duerr holds an MSc in Political Science/International Relations from the London School of Economics (LSE) and an LLM in International Law from the University of Turin.
