Last week Ridley’s Scott Napoleon entered the cinema’s. The expectations for the film were high, since this director made his directoral debut in 1977 with The Duellists, which is set in the Napoleonic Age. Scott was also responsible for the box office success of Gladiator. In the run-up to the release of the film Scott antagonized historians by discharching their criticism with the words: “Get a life”. This quote and his movie couldn’t be let unanswered. SHN’s own Professor Beatrice de Graaf was at BBC’s Radio 4 and Dutch radio to talk about the film and wrote a review and a column about Napoleon for the Dutch newspapers. Student-Assistant Mathijs van der Loo joined also the Dutch radio to give his own opinion on the film.
With the film the debate about Napoleon has gained much attention. You can now find out for yourself in the cinema whether it is worth this criticism.
