Night on Earth: A History of International Humanitarianism in the Near East, 1918-1930

Humanitarian aid was an intense but ephemeral phenomenon. Humanitarian organisations like ‘Near East Relief’ and the ‘American Red Cross’ usually consisted of Christian missionaries. What were the motivations that drove these humanitarians? How did their activities and network expand in the post-WWI Near East? And how did the arrival of salaried ‘experts’ effect unpaid humanitarians? Professor Rodogno will discuss this and more in the upcoming lecture about his new book.

Davide Rodogno is professor of International History and Politics and is currently stationed at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland.  He also won the Italian literary award, Feudo Di Maida Prize, for his book Il nuovo ordine mediterraneo about the history of Italy’s fascist imperial ambition in the 1940s.
